For an outline of their respective lineages check out
http://www.levenez.com/unix/history.html
Googling a bit (google is your friend) also brought up this article
http://www.daemonnews.org/200006/dadvocate.html
You'll have to scroll down a bit to get to the appropriate heading.
Keep in mind this is Daemonnews and they're mainly a *BSD
newsletter. So while I think that it does a pretty good job, others
may find it biased.
For anything else I'd advise google, google, and google. :-)

Hey, are you trying to start a flame war? :-) Seriously, I have my
opinion, but that's all I consider it to be. A question like that
is bound to get some zealots from either camp crawling out of the
woodwork.
As far as my "opinion" goes, I think the BSD's are more robust, but
your milage may vary. (Bear in mind, most of my experience in the
world of unix is in BSD.) :-)

| BSD with regards unix can mean at least three things a BSD user experience,
BSD Administration and a kernel based on BSD code.
I'm of BSD birth so that's my preferred mode of operation. That means I type
ps ax If I was a SYSV'r I'd type ps -ef. I prefer many things that came from
BSD.
Its kind of a silly question to ask which is better BSD or Linux.
Personally I think Linux sucks. It never was a good kernel for
multi-user/multi processor work. This has kind of changed with a lot of
work. But Linux still suffers from too many good ideas.
For instance there is nothing that makes Linux better than
NetBSD/FreeBSD/OpenBSD and in many ways its worse. Its just become a
popularised buzz word.
Just my opinion
mark.

A rant by one particular individual:

The price of both is $0. Try both and see which ever one is more
appropriate for your needs. If you know someone who's using one it
will probably be better to follow their lead: that way you have
someone to call on for help.
