Dear Experts,

We have the Oracle Database running on DG/UX AVIION 3600 hardware ( SERVER)

Now while working, I have given the command to (tar) /etc/passwd to Digital
Audio Tape --- but it has some hardware problem and the console got hanged.

Later after many Control-C, I could get (#) prompt.

At that # prompt I gave (exit), which took me to Console Login.

Now it is not allowing me to login by root or sys or by any other login. I
believe the /etc/passwd file is corrupted.

Please help me to get the (#) prompt, because I have the copy of /etc/passwd
in some other directory. I am also unable to login from remote terminal by
TELNET or FTP. The System is ON and ORACLE is UP

UREGENT PLEASE HELP

Thanks in advance

Can you reboot the system from a different device? Then you could mount
your usual disks separately, and replace /etc/passwd.

No possible: NO Telnet or even FTP is being allowed by the system.

Please don't top post.

I think Jeff meant something like: Can you boot this machine ie. with
Knoppix?

If so, you could mount your disks from within Knoppix and replace/repair
your 'passwd'.

If Knoppix can boot the box and read the FS?

The common solution is to boot to single user after a forced
shutdown, from some console or switch the system off by hand.

Many *nix don't require a password in single user mode.

Mount the needed FS and empty the root password in passwd/shadow
or wherever it is on this system. The manuals should know more.
