You cannot optimize a server running an unknown operating system to handle an
unknown load of unknown applications. It's as optimal as the vendor could
make it out of the box for the mix of uses you've specified.

One thing does come to mind - turn off anything you don't need. Oh, and set
up systems (people systems, not just computer systems) to monitor and evaluate
what loads you're getting and how well you're handling them. Most everything
else is specific to what you're actually doing.

There are things you can do to tune specific systems for specific apps or even
specific performance characteristics. If we had specifics, we might be able
to help. But probably not as much as the system or app vendor you're trying
to optimize. For popular ones, there are likely books on the topic.
