UPS on DEC Alpha 2/100 OSF 3.2C

| Can anyone recommend a UPS & management SW which will run on a DEC
Alpha running OSF 3.2C. The Alpha is on a ship & powered from a
generator so I need to level out the supply and also log any instances
when the power dips etc
Thanks

I can recommend that you upgrade... 3.2c is OLD. So old that I don't
believe you can make it Y2K compliant.
The folks in comp.sys.dec will probably have some more specific hardware
advice and the guys in comp.unix.tru64 will probably have more info on the
OS, so I've included them both in the newsgroups line.

nut ( http://www.networkupstools.org/ ) is one of the better and more
general tools ...

To size a UPS you need to know the power requirements of
the equipment. Can you give us the type of Alpha you
have, as well as any other equipment that will need to be
connected to the UPS (screen, etc). If you want to have
a power line monitoring function (and not merely an
automated shut-down function), you'll need to make sure
to get an intelligent UPS (meaning one of the more
expensive models). Personally, I've had good experiences
with Best Power, APC, MGE and TrippLite. I second the
recommendation for NUT.
I've fond memories from the 1980ies of a huge Emerson
100KVA UPS with a Diesel engine backup - when that one
started to run it was easy to believe you were on an
oil tanker :-)
Take care,

There are some special properties that a UPS must have to work on
a ship. They are related to the typical ship's electrical system.
The input AC line will be floating (neither side grounded). The line
frequency may be unstable to the extent that a UPS designed for normal
land use will shut down from out-of-range frequency.
It would be good to discuss shipboard use of the UPS with its
manufacturer. Some of them have solutions for these problems.

The minimum for Y2K compliance is 4.0D, which is also old.

We're running APC SmartUPS with APC PowerCHUTE+ and it is working,
flawlessly, but...
The problem is that is some unsupported version and there is no official
download for Tru64. Or at least, there was none 5 years ago. I could
check it out...
Nix.
