Thanks for your help Doug. I have saved your posts for future
reference.

Last night I put a new ethernet card in the box, and all seems to be
working. I hadn't had a chance to check something so simple until then,
and to be honest I had all but discounted that as the problem because
the nature of the problem was coming and going, I figured not a hardware
problem but a software one.
