Well that was all wishful thinking...

The problem came back. I also tried different cable between modem and
gateway. Still no fix.

I also tried another pc/gateway box - same problem!

So it must be between the modem and my ISP. Not a local thing at all.
It is only now that when I ring ISP and tell them changed boxes etc they
believe me that it is not my end with problem. They just heard 'linux'
and said 'we don't support that, must be your pc' and that is that.

Anyway, they are sending some techs out (again) to test the line from
street to building. Hope that's it.

The ISP can ping the modem, but are getting packet losses there. So
shouldn't that have told them the problem is between the modem and their
hub/exchange? Duh.
