I am a new administrator. Please kindly tell me where I can find the FAQ
documents for beginners. I want to read them before I ask any stupid
questions.

Thx

I see much cluefulness in this one. If you can tell us what OS you have,
we can give you specific suggestions, or if you're interested in general
info, that's OK too - what are you after?

David,

Shame on me. :-)

I am using a Sparc Ultra 10 workstation. I have several questions.

1. Set the hostname.
2. Install some special language font for all applications. for example, Chinese.
3. Set all disply font bigger, I like bigger display.
4. Man -k doesn't work. I didnt' use unix for 2 years. Really need man -k feature to recovery
memory.
5. Set the general path for all users.
6. Install general software for users.

I thought all of them are in FAQ document. So, I asked where to find FAQ.

Thanks

No, not at all - R'ing TFM first is always an admirable trait.

If you're starting from an OS load, it'll ask you. If not, the
cleanest way is to do a sys-unconfig and let it ask you when it
reboots. It'll ask IP and routing info, as well as location and
maybe languages.

These are probably going to be available in the CDE window manager's
controls for you.

You want to use 'catman' to populate that which is searched by man -k.
man catman for details ;)

So Solaris then - I'd probably go with the comp.sys.sun FAQ, at:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/comp-sys-sun-faq/ - It has links to others
as well. Casper Dik's FAQ is another good one, linked from this one.

You'll want to start with the FAQ file for newsgroup comp.unix.questions.
Then you'll want to locate one of the admin newsgroups that is vendor
specific. CUA being a general newsgroup isn't good about maintaining a
FAQ because there are too many options. Better to leave the FAQs to
UNIX in general and to vendor editions in specific.

rtfm.mit.edu is one of many places that keep FAQ archives.

Good job: Looking to RFTM.

Shall we presume Solaris then? If so, FAQs and docs can be found at:
http://www.sunhelp.org/
http://docs.sun.com/
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/
http://sunsolve.sun.com/

|2. Install some special language font for all applications. for example,

http://developers.sun.com/techtopic...faqs/index.html

|3. Set all disply font bigger, I like bigger display.

Depends on your environment - OpenWindows, CDE, or GNOME - look in the
docs or control panels for each.

|4. Man -k doesn't work. I didnt' use unix for 2 years. Really need man
|-k feature to recovery
|memory.

Read the man page for man and look for the tip under the description
of -k about what you need to do to make it work.
