I never tried it, but using a mysql database for pam/nss seems interesting :

Anyone tried it ?

If I have something like something like 20 or 30 GNU/Linux computers, is
there anything that could make me want to use something else than mysql,
for example LDAP ?

It depends. What will you be using the database for? Usually the
application dictates the structure behind it; not much overlap
between mysql and LDAP from what I've seen.
