If there have been no physical changes then there was a software
change. Or your belief that there have been no physical changes
is mistaken.
There are more software settings than just in /etc/remote.
I recall getting this problem when modem control was turned
on for a serial line and the device I used did not support
modem control. You have an 8-pin connection, so it should
support all of the modem signals.
1) The Sunfire 6800 switched to using modem control on its
serial line.
2) The Sunblade 100 stopped using modem control on its serial
line.
Alternate possibility - The SunFire 6800 turned off its
login monitor on it's serial line. "man pmadm" "pmadm -l"
Also ttymon(1M) and sacadm(1M).
