Can anyone advise where I can find any document that explains all the

man top

If you want a better answer, you need to provide any sort of system
details.

Apologies! My Compaq Tru64 v4.0F doesn't seem to have a man entry for
top.
I have found a man entry for top on redhat linux but the linux output
is slightly different from my Tru64 output.

Ah, so does it have any man entries at all? If not, try:
catman
to generate your manpages (might not be that on Tru64, I don't know).

Try getting the manpage. I would imagine a google for
Tru64 top manpage
might get you something useful.

Tru64 at least 4.0F and IIRC any other version didn't come with
top. It's likely someone compiled/installed it additional,
perhaps the man page is on the system but not in users manpath,
I'd search the system /usr/local is a good idea and if the man
page isn't on the box, simply recompile the package.

The person who downloaded the package might have deleted the
source, the only the executible was copied.

If you can't find the man page anywhere on the system, one thing
to try is to download the package from a Linux or *BSD distribution
and try to port it. Succeed and you not only get the man page,
but the output ends up the same as on that other system so the
differences are gone.

Ok Now that we know you are running Tru64 I can provide a little more
information for you.
The version of top for Tru64 that most often gets installed is the one from
the Open Source software collection.
The documentation for it is here...
http://h30097.www3.hp.com/demos/ossc/doc/top-3.5beta5/ Although this is for
the version which shipped with 5.1b rather than your ancient 4.0f.
The version for 4.x is no longer available from HP so I don't know if you
can get the docs for it.

The version of top I've used under Tru64 was William LeFebvre's.
