Recheck the passwd and shadow files - with something that does show non-ASCII
characters (such as control characters) as well.
You could also go through the passwd file from the oracle line towards the
beginning of the file (try "id xxx" for each line above "oracle"). If
there's a single corrupted line, this could help in locating it.
However, I'm also slightly concerned that your system may be compromised.
Is it in a such network location where it could be targeted from the
Internet (or is there a reason to suspect internal intruders)?
