Are there any programs, like gs, that would take diff output and
format it nicely in the --side-by-side option with the changes
appearing on one side in bold format? I did use a script that did
this once, and they supposedly used ghostscript somehow, but I'm not
sure how it worked, or if ghostscript even formats output the way I'm
thinking....

Try sdiff on Solaris.
