| Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good how to write shell scripts book - it's
comeing up to the time of year when folks start buying Chrimbo presents
and I'd like a scripting book this year :-)

How about the GNU Bash Reference Manual? It's £19.95 from Network
Theory <URI:http://www.network-theory.co.uk/bash/manual/>.
It's not a "how to" book, but you can't do better than the official
language reference.

The source code is usually more accurate.

That appears to be the Bash texinfo documentation. If you want to pay
20 pounds for something already to be found on your hard disk fair
enough, but...
http://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/2001/04/shell.html
isn't "how to program in shell" but rather lists some common
mistakes; the OP might find it useful.

How about, "Learning the Bash Shell", Newham & Rosenblatt (O'Reilly)
I have it and like it. (My script are still pretty indadequate mind you,
but that is my fault)

Have you considered learning PERL or Python and using that where you
currently use shell scripts?
I use PERL for most things.
This approach has the benefit that the skills are transferable to other
uses such as CGI, etc.

I personally like printed documentation that I can lie on my desk
while working, so I do find it useful (you could print and bind it
yourself, of course). They also donate $1 to the FSF for each copy
sold, if you care about that sort of thing.

That's very useful. I'm guilty of unnecessary of of cat!

And to other platforms. I've started doing some useful things with Perl
on my one remaining Windows machine.

May be O'Reilly's "Unix Power Tools" would do?

That's the problem with a scripting book. Paying for one. Get osimplay (my
x86 assembler in Bash) and a box of chocolates.
