You need to read a good book on Unix programming. The one by Stevens
comes to mind, as does Rich Teer's.
While reading, be sure to try things out on a real computer,
especially bits you might have trouble understanding.

What is the fastest way into a killfile?
Ask tens of trivial questions in rapid succession, without any
evidence that you've spent some effort researching them first.
