a SCO UNIX boot problem.pls.

| a ibm server with SCO openserver release 5.0.7
i know little about unix...a
i forgot the root pwd,so i try to recover it .
how to ?
i try to boot with floppy or cdrom(installation disk), and when i face
the prompt "boot:",i donnot know what to do next......pls help!

I suggest you install Linux, then you might get some help.
Alternatively, contact SCO.
You might have noticed that SCO are a rather dishonest and
disreputable company. If you need to depend upon the system, you
should seriously consider replacing OpenServer with something that you
can garuantee will exist next year, like Linux, BSD, Solaris, etc..

I hope you mean you're trying to reinstall the OS without overwriting the
user data files. If there's a way to learn root's password without
reinstalling, it'd be a huge security hole for hackers to exploit.

Try pressing RETURN.
Look for the printed manuals that came with the SCO OpenServer CD. It'll
tell you how to (re)install the OS. If you can't find the printed manuals,
try looking on the CD or on SCO's web site.

But you can probably CHANGE root's password without reinstalling, by
booting from something else and mounting the hard disk. This is much
less of a security problem as it requires physical access to the machine.
