The version out now is labeled for 5.2. Christmas is coming and it's on
my list but would it be worth waiting for the 6.0 version? If so, any
idea how long that might take (time between versions?) I have the
Maurice Bach book "Design and Implementation of Unix" from 1996 or so.
Is that too old or not relevant enough?

Not sure.

AFAIK, Bach hasn't been updated since it was first published, aeons ago. If
that is the case, I'd say that it's maybe a bit too old now, and would recommend
something newer, like Uresh Vahalia's UNIX Internals, or Mauro and McDougall's
Solaris Internals.

I believe Maurice J Bach book is getting dated. However, It is an
excellent introductory book in UNIX concepts. Newer books like "Design and
Implementation of FreeBSD" tend to explain more things then just
basics, which is obvious since UNIX in general and BSD in particular has
changed a lot since MJB book.

So if one is a newbie diving first time into UNIX world, MJB is good book.
But if you are UNIX veteran wanting to catch up with latest development,
the above books are excellent.
