Compiling make in one place and supply a tar ball to install in another

I've ask this question before and can't find where I put the answer.
I need to compile make 3.81. Create a tarball to give to the susadmins
for installation.
I know I can compile in one place and install in another. I don't tink
I used --prefix but5 I don't really remember.
