Is there a difference between ls -l and ls -lt?

yes.

the "t" flag means to sort by time stamp. (date & time)

if you do a "ls -ltr", this will list the the files by time, but in reverse
order, so the last file listed will be the file that was most recently
modified.

check the man page for a broader description.
