Folks,

I need to build a "find" interface, Data which is generated by my
application is stored in the Unix server. Many users need to access
them (find and fetch them) on a very frequent basis.

All the users presently use Documentum, which really is slow and I am
thinking of having something similiar. I am not able to figure out how
this is done becuase there is no HTTP / apache running on the server.

Can any one help if I can use any other protocol? (as far as I know
only FTP is running on that system).

Ram.

Type the URL address as below and replacing with your id, pw, host and
dirname

ftp://userid:password@hostname
or
ftp://userid:password@hostname/dirname

Thanks a lot, but I was thinking of program becuase it's the end-users
who need the report and to provide them with an UI so that they can
search for the reports, in most cases they would not know how which
directory it belongs to !! There are 1000's of files. So If any help on
the libraries and langauages that I can use will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks, Ram.

Why not, if you want users to access the data using a web browser?
Apache is free software.

But Bill, I am not an admin and cant install such stuff. I am just a
programmer. In an organisation getting a HTTP server is asking for a
gate pass.

Hmmm..... Surprisingly Documentum does not use HTTP.....

Documentum is an expensive application and one your company obviously
decided to use. Why are you going behind their backs by trying to
develop and use something else? If the product doesn't meet your
customer's needs, then you need to work with your company's IT group
to get a better product for the company, not implementing your own local
stuff that does the same thing....
