Author Can I send an AIM message from a script?

I've been using URLs to launch AIM messages to people; they look like
this one which I originall copied from a YaBB (bulletin board) page:

aim:goim?screenname=aperson&message=From+web+page:+

That works nicely for clicking on a web link, but I'd like to use AIM
as a direct-messaging system from bash script files. I tried GET to
launch the URL but the transport is not supported. I don't reallt know
what to try next.

I'm using RHL9 with bash 2.05.
Thanks in advance, Ian.
