Author how kill terminal if ELSE condition is met?

i'm looking for some leads to
investigate for this problem:

I'm trying to kill terminal
from within an if/else.

(from within a bash shell)
i'd like to somehow include
a command within an Else
portion of an if/else that
would terminate Terminal
(safely) on mac OS X.

it's crucial that terminal
does Not quit if the first portion of the
if/else is met. i only want
terminal to quit if the ELSE
portion of the condition is triggered.

thank you
martin
