I would like to retain my bash history for... well pretty much forever.

does anyone see any problem with:

# chattr +a ~/.bash_history

as a solution?

thanks.

Dunno, but you could try it and see. Seems a little kludgy to me.
What if you just unset HISTFILESIZE? As the man page says, "After
saving the history, the history file is truncated to contain no more
than HISTFILESIZE lines. If HISTFILESIZE is not set, no truncation is
performed."
