Author system slowdown & stop

Greetings,

We are currently running a DS20 with t64 v5.1b as an email
(sendmail) and web (apache) server for our school. The OS is patched
and we are familiar with the apps. There are about 300 users connecting
via imap and 20k web hits per day. There are no users, other than
systems personnel, logged in. Monitoring with top (~1.0 load), swapon
(92% available) and df (no partition at >70% usage) never shows anything
suspicious however the system intermittently slows to a crawl
(semi-weekly) and occasionally (bi-weekly) reaches a point of no
recovery and must be rebooted (during business hours when I'm away from
my desk of course!!). Does anybody have any idea what the problem could
be or any suggestions what and how to monitor the system to get some
clues?

Todd Seeleman
