crash dump/cpu panic

| Hi folks,
I am a newb UNIX admin and my Compaq P166 is crashing to the bios
prompt once every 2-3 months. I have no idea why, and its driving me
nuts. I suspect it is a RAM issue, but whenever it crashes, there is
no user activity on the server. I know this because it is our backup
machine. Can anyone give me any clues? Thanks a million!!

I see that you're running the binary error log daemon. Is there
anything interesting in the binary error log that would give more
information? What makes you suspect memory?
Use dia to have a look through the binary error log. You might see
something leading up to the panic.

You appear to have 4 memory SIMMS, each 64MB in size. They are arranged as
two 128MB banks (0 and 1) of memory, with one of each pair providing the
low longword, the other the high longword. For this error entry, the SIMM
reporting the error is the high longword of bank 1, which is in SIMM slot
J25, which is the 3rd slot from the cpu module.
However, you can't necessarily blame that SIMM for your history of errors.
You really need to review your error log data or other crashes for similar
data. If they all point to the SIMM, then it's likely to be bad. But, it
could be the slot, as well. Try swapping SIMMs between slots, and see if
the problem moves to a different slot.
If you find that the memory errors are occurring in the high longwords of
both banks, you may have a problem with the motherboard or cpu module.

Rob,
Your AlphaStation 400 appears to have a bad memory module. Based purely on this
event, you should replace the 64MB SIMM at J23 (Bank 0, LW1). However, to be
certain you should go back to the previous Machine Checks and verify that it's
always occurring on the same SIMM. If the callout is a different SIMM each time
then it could be a problem on the motherboard. I used the register values
listed under "Machine check abort" in your crash-data output to analyze this.
Here are the details:
The EV4 requested an External Cycle
The Cycle being performed = Read Block.
Bit 10 is set - Fill Parity Error
Bit 11 is clear - DCache Fill Reference
The failing Quadword is = 1
BIU received data with a parity error from outside the CPU while performing
either a Data Cache or I Cache fill. Detected by the CPU Synchronous to the
execution of the offending instruction.
