| Hello,
I am looking to improve the performance of my 500AU workstations
slightly. Now that prices have dropped etc I am thinking of two
options.
a) upgrade the cpu from 500mhz to 600mhz (the chipset says it supports
that change).
b) add the cache module to the motherboards.
What would see the best improvements in performance. Some resources say
that the cache would and others say the cpu upgrade. depending on the
applications running. The systems are being used as web servers db
servers and a few desktops.
They are all running Tru64.

| Dear Johnny & list:
You can probably just change the clock setting for your CPU. The 21264
chips are mostly capable of running at higher speeds. Just change the
dip switch setting:
left to right 0010 0101
where 0 is down and 1 is up (on)
Feel your cpu heat sink after you make the change. If you can keep your
fingers on it is is OK.
I have a PWS 500 I OC-ed to 600 and have been running for a year, no
problems. Some people say the Samsung CPUs run cooler/better than the
DEC originals. What this means to you, is you probably don't need to
buy a 600 mhz CPU, just O'Clock the one you have.
As far as the cache module goes, the best one is the 4 meg unit. I've
got one and it doesn't make much difference. The gurus say you *might*
need it for integer-intensive work.
It's probably not the best place to put your money.
good luck

| Hello,
How do you know if you have a samsung or dec original cpu (this is more
out of interest?).
