Ok how it works is this...
If you don't select a proxy at all, then all trafic to port 80 goes via
whichever proxy NTL have selected for your address, so all of your web
browsing will be done via that proxy.
If on the other hand you explicitly choose a proxy in the browser settings
then it will use that instead.
Configure all of your other applications to take their settings from the
browser, if they don't have that setting then either leace them alone or
just pick one that works and change it if it breaks.
There really is no more science to it than that.
