Probably a broken GNU kit (64Bit problems?) or another weirdness?

I tried dd on such a system without any problems.

$ what /usr/bin/dd
/usr/bin/dd:
$RCSfile: crt0.s,v $ $Revision: 1.1.26.2 $ (DEC) $Date: 1997/04/03 22:25:40 $
$RCSfile: dd.c,v $ $Revision: 4.3.78.2 $ (DEC) $Date: 2003/04/25 18:50:55 $

$ sizer -v
Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.1B (Rev. 2650); Fri Jun 24 09:49:20 EDT 2005
