Dear all,

I'd like to install RH8 on an older machine that has got an ISA Chips &
Technologies 65535 card in it.
I can't seem to get X running on it :-((
It's only got 512KB on the card, could that be the problem ?

Is there any way to try and configure the VGA card after installation except
for redhat-config-xfree86 ?
The problem is X won't start so I'm unable to configure the card.

Hope some of you can help me out

Regards,
Dennis

If you have another machine running X11, you can alway do ssh -X and display
r-c-xfree on the remote machine.

In the RH9 card definitions database this CT65535 is in section "untested".
look in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11. There you find links to "Cards" (the definitions)
and to XF86Config (the configuration file).
In the config file there are the values you need to change.
In section "Device" you need to specify your card (correct values in "Cards"
mentioned above) and in section "Screen" you need to set a mode that your card
supports.

But I don't recommend using X with such an old card. The machine does not have
PCI where you can plug an old Virge DX in or sth like that? If so, its probaly
*that* old that runlevel 5 won't be any fun at all.

I almost forgot: didn't anaconda (during install) ask you about the video card?
you could've set the correct values right at install time. (in case you didn't)
If you did, there is probaly a reason, why this card is not in the "tested" section.

Good luck with it.
