Guys, I need some help. I have downloaded all the KDE 3.2.1 Estable
packages for Fedora Core 1 but I want APT to install it.

I used RedHat 9.0 but when I tryed to install KDE 3.2 my system died. So
Iīm afraid to install it again in my Fedora...

Perhaps I need to modify some apt files but I donīt know which ones. I
tryed moving the packages to /var/cache/apt/archives and then apt-get
install but it didnīt work.

Could you help me?

I see no reason to be afraid to install the updated KDE-3.2.1 RPM's, just
make sure you have meet all the requirements. From where the downloaded
KDE-3.2.1 and related packages are located install as root from init 3
type something like 'rpm -Fvh *.rpm' without the quotes. This will updated
all the already installed RPM's and not any new ones, if you need
additional packages installed and they are in the same location type
something like 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' instead.

You should at least re-start your X11 services before attempting to use
KDE-3.2.1 the first time. Notice I said 'install as root from init 3' in
other words, log-out of your cuurent GUI session, Press the three key
combo of Ctrl+Alt+F1, log on as root and type 'init 3' before starting the
upgrade process.

I read in a KDE page I only needed to use rpm -Uvh --nodeps. I did it
and my system died. I restarted the system but the X never raise up
again, so I changed to Fedora. This happened with Shrinke.

so, I only need rpm -Fvh *.rpm to upgrade all the KDE 3.1.4 installed
packages to KDE 3.2.1? it will find the installed packages and it wonīt
install another ones?

I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, then init 3 (in text mode) and in this mode I have
to install everything or I have to return to graphical mode again to do
the upgrade?

Never use the --nodeps switch unless you know exactly that it will work
without any problems. If your not 100% sure then don't use it.

Correct, read 'man rpm' for the details.

Install from runlevel 3 (init 3) it's the non-X11 (graphical mode), no
need to install any part of the upgrade from the graphical mode. If you
get any errors about some package missing then make sure you have all the
needed packages in one location without any extra packages and install
them all at the same time with; rpm -Uvh *.rpm

To get the list of the KDE RPM's needed for the upgrade use;

rpm -qa | grep kde

You might get a few extra packages in the output, just ignore them;

$ rpm -qa | grep kde | sort
arts-1.2.1-0.1
kdeaddons-3.2.1-0.1
kdeadmin-3.2.1-0.1
kdeartwork-3.2.1-0.1
kdeartwork-icons-3.2.1-0.1
kdebase-3.2.1-0.1
kdebindings-3.2.1-0.1
kdegames-3.2.1-0.1
kdegraphics-3.2.1-0.1
kdelibs-3.2.1-0.1
kdemultimedia-3.2.1-0.1
kdenetwork-3.2.1-0.1
kdepim-3.2.1-0.1
kdetoys-3.2.0-0.1
kdeutils-3.2.1-0.1
lockdev-1.0.0-23
switchdesk-kde-3.9.8-15

The last two items(lockdev and switchdesk-kde) can be ignored for the
upgrade. Note, the arts output was added by me (by hand) as it's part of
the KDE-3.2.1 upgrade.

FYI: It's possible to run/use the KDE-3.2.1 Fedora RPM's with RHL9, it
takes a bit of additional work however.

Bad news, I couldn't. I tryed rpm -Fvh *.rpm but I got a lot of problems
with dependencies. I tryed with rpm -Uvh <package> but I only was able to
upgrade arts and arts-devel. Have you got the order I need to follow to
install all the packages?...because dependencies drive me crazy :-(

I copy all the packages into a new folder in my profile, then I press
Ctrl+Alt+F1, after that init 3 and at last I tryed the rpm -Fvh *.rpm

Have I done something wrong?

No, I normally install something like the KDE packages at one time. After
making sure I have all the packages needed for the upgrade in on location.

Sounds like you might have missed a few packages, here's a almost complete
list of what is needed(no -devel packages listed);

arts-1.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
cdparanoia-libs-alpha9.8-18.i386.rpm
esound-0.2.31-1.i386.rpm
imlib-1.9.13-14.i386.rpm
kdeaddons-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdeadmin-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdeartwork-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdeartwork-icons-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdebase-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdebindings-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdegames-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdegraphics-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdelibs-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdemultimedia-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdenetwork-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdepim-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
kdetoys-3.2.0-0.1.i386.rpm
kdeutils-3.2.1-0.1.i386.rpm
libart_lgpl-2.3.16-2.i386.rpm
libieee1284-0.2.8-1.i386.rpm
libmng-1.0.4-4.i386.rpm
libmusicbrainz-2.0.2-5.i386.rpm
libogg-1.0-5.i386.rpm
libpng-1.2.2-17.i386.rpm
libraw1394-0.9.0-12.i386.rpm
libusb-0.1.7-3.i386.rpm
libvorbis-1.0-8.i386.rpm
libxslt-1.0.33-2.i386.rpm
lm_sensors-2.8.1-1.i386.rpm
qt-3.3.1-0.2.i386.rpm
redhat-artwork-0.93-1.i386.rpm
samba-common-3.0.2-7.FC1.i386.rpm
switchdesk-3.9.8-18.i386.rpm
switchdesk-kde-3.9.8-18.i386.rpm
taglib-1.0-0.1.i386.rpm
wireless-tools-26-1.i386.rpm

The qt, redhat-artwork and taglib RPM packages should be available the
same location you got the KDE-3.2.1 RPM's from. Most of the other non-KDE
packages should be already be installed. Check with; rpm -q <package_name>
(Example: rpm -q lm_sensors). Your versions of the other non-KDE packages
may vary from the list above, but they still might be alright for the
upgrade.

Here's a quick way to generate a list of install RPM's on your system;

$ rpm -qa --queryformat '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}.%{ARCH}.rpm\n' |
sort > Installed.txt

It's one long line with a space between the pipe (|) and the word 'sort'.

You might want to try this instead, it's apt or yum enabled way to install
KDE-3.2.1; http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/

thanks, as soon I get home I'll do what you said.

A question, how do you know all the non KDE packages you need to do an
upgrade? is there a web page which explain it?

Another question, I need those non KDE package installed and placed in
the KDE 3.2.1 folder in order to install correctly? or just to be installed.

The third one, there is a way to say apt to install KDE? if I have almost
all the packages it needs in my hard disk.

By querying the KDE packages with rpm. I don't know of a web site that
lists the Fedora packages by RPM name but there is;

http://www.kde.org/info/requirements/3.2.php

They need to be installed with the KDE-3.2.1 at the same time or they need
to be already installed. If you have everything needed in one place with
no extra packages use 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' without the quotes. Remove (or
move) any packages that are already install from the location before
starting.

:-) I managed to install KDE 3.2.1 I verified all the packages in the
installation folder but in the process I got a conflict between a
koffice file and kdelibs. I uninstalled koffice and all works fine!!!

A question, KDE 3.2.1 seems to be slower than 3.2.1, every program I run
last more to open. Therefore, I need to click a icon more than a time to
get it the focus :-? and the hard disk sounds a lot.

Another question, I have a Lost and found menu, why?....It has Language,
Network, Mouse, Keyboard, ....

The last one, the Process Table shows the X process consuming more than
the others, this could be the guilty why I feel this version slower.

THANKS A LOT!!
I couldn't have done it without your help :-)

Yep, you need the updated koffice packages for KDE-3.2.1

Don't know, maybe it's related to the amount of system memory available.
KDE-3.2.1 takes more memory then the version supplied with FC1. Also see
'man hdparm' for information on how to tweak your hard drive for maximum
performance.

> Another question, I have a Lost and found menu, why?....It has Language,

I got the same 'Lost and found' menu when I upgraded also. It's due to
differences in the configuration settings from the older version KDE. If
you don't mind do so, exiting from the GUI session and deleting the hidden
..kde directory and stating KDE will re-create the hidden .kde directory.
You will have to re-configure your desktop to your liking if you do this,
but the 'Lost and found' menu will be gone.

Yep, if possible add some more RAM (256-MB or better recommend).

I have 256 MB DDR333, I should not have problems with KDE 3.2.1

I will try that command.

If I remove the hidden folder it will recreate the 3.1.4 menus? and what
about the new programs the 3.2.1 have, where will those be

I have enough memory, I think

Have linux have a defragment tool for ext3?-in KDE.
