Author filesystem error on ext3

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 with kernel 2.4.21, RAID1 and ext3

After a power outage the server did no more complete the boot process and
asked for root password for maintenance. Some fs errors were not
correctable.

Now I think I didn't understand what the journaling fs does here. I thought
that exactly this should never happen with ext3. Mounting the partitions
manually worked though ...

Is there any way to prevend this?

This is in /var/log/messages:

EXT3-fs warning: mounting fs with errors, running e2fsck is recommended
EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on md(9,1), internal journal
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
