vi editor Question

When I exit Vi it refreshes the screen and clears away the text of the vi
open session.

In the past I have had vi set up so you exit from Vi, it does not refresh
the screen but leaves the remainder of the vi file above the command prompt.
I have forgotten how to make it do this. Can anyone refresh my memory on how
to do this?
