Firing Up a Monitor on RH 6.2

| Yes, I know 6.2 is old, but I need to install it and get a monitor working
on it. It's 6.2 with another kernel built on top of it. All goes pretty well
until I try to boot up. It seems to fire up XWin and then the screen goes
blank. I've tried two different monitors with the same results, a 19" Futura
and 14" Mag xyz (forgot). Neither is in the list of monitors, so I use
generic monitor (not multi-synch). Once I tried setting the 19" V/H freq and
that didn't work. The install sequence has a test of the monitor after
making the video card choice. The window comes up briefly (very) and then
disappears. The machine is an IBM 500MHz with an S3 Trio3D video card, 4096K
memory. 128M RAM.
I guess I have one more monitor I can try. A Viewsonic A90 19". It is in the
list I believe.
Suggestions?
