Yesterday, I upgraded Mozilla and Evolution using Ximian Red Carpet. When I
attempted to re-boot RH after the upgrade I received the following:

INIT: Id "X" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 Minutes

Being a relative new-comer to Linux, and because I had been thinking about
upgrading to RH 9.0, I went to my local Staples and purchased RH 9.0. Due to
my inexperience, I believed installing the new RH as an upgrade my problem
would go away. Wrong again.

Based on info from the NET, I edited /etc/inittab from id:5:initdefault to
id:3:initdefault.

Now when I boot I get the error: "/etc/X11/prefdm: line 1: =: command not
found", prior to the id "X" respawn error.

Looking in the /etc/X11/prefdm file: line 1 = #/bin/sh & line 2 =
Path=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin. I have been unable to
determine what line 1 should be.

My machine is a Dell 800 Mhz Dimension with 512 meg ram configured as dual
boot Windows ME/RH.

I have submitted my problem to RH support since my purchase included 30 day
support, but have received absolutely NO response from the RH support folks.

Obviously, I have little experience with Linux and would appreciate any
assistance in getting my RH operating again.

Thanks for any assistance.
