Redhat 9 does not come with an mp3 codec. You can install the needed rpm
from www.freshrpms.net.

ok, i downloaded and ran the rpm install.

it threw some debug messages (see below) and seemed to install
BUT it still doesn't play when clicking on Shoutcast streams.

I looked in Options/Preferences/Audio Plug-ins and didn't see
one for mp3.

Is there another configuration step?

That's ok. But did you get any sound? Does xmms play mp3 files from
local filesystem?

Seems your sound is broken anyway.

Nope.

It passes the sound test after I installed
ALSA. I can hear it play the test sound.
