How do I enable motherboard sound in Linux, I tried to probe for soundcard,
but it's not a sound card, duh... So what do I do?

I do not know how to connect to the internet. I have a modem under
hardware. I made a device with my isp info, but it won't activate.

Any help would be appreciated, this was the short version, if you need more
info ask... please!

The chip that runs your on-motherboard sound was made by someone and has a
model number. Find out what it is. You can do this by either reading the
manual that came with your motherboard or looking at the motherboard
manufacturer's web site for information on your model.

Once you know the make and model of the sound chip you should be able to
install the appropriate linux module.

Same thing for the modem. You need info about make and model before you
can configure it. One warning regarding modems. Many modems these days are
"winmodems" which are designed to run under Microsoft Windows operating
systems. Sometimes there are Linux workarounds for these modems, sometimes
not. But until you know the details regarding the one you have, you'll be
hard pressed to make much progress.

Ok... I don't know how much more of this I can take, it's driving me insane.
I have googled for many hours over this, and I can't find a solution. I
have an BCM V.92 56k modem comes standard with dells. I also have an Intel
MB with what appears to be soundmax digital audio under the device manager.
I don't really give a crap about sound at the moment, because it's
monotonous to have to reboot into XP to use this newsgroup and back and
forth. I would rather have my internet connection working.

Anyway thats my modem soo... if anyone can find any way to install it in RH
Linux 9 please let me know! I also need help on installing it, I tried an
ALSA file for my integrated sound on my MB and I have no clue where to
start. I unzipped it in Home, and read the various readme files, the
instructions are very random. I'm not quite sure I understand the way
things go in Linux yet, in fact i'm certain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks God Bless

I believe the BCM v.92 is one of those crippleware winmodems. Your best
bet is to buy a proper hardware modem - Linux can run those without
problem. (I have an IBM laptop running RH9 and bought a PCMCIA modem that
runs great. Not near as much hassle as the built in "MWave" modem.)

However, if you want to try things the hard way, try this web site:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...2003/09/2/86449
and see if those instructions help. (Me? I'd rather spend a few bucks and
get a real modem.)

I am now sending this from Linux it worked and I couldn't be more excited!!!
Thank you so much Wesley! Like I said I was about to give up, but that
thread link that you gave me was perfect, I had to go to a few diff
directories than he said, but I somehow made it through errorless. Anyway
thanks for your help! Now I just need to get my sound running. Thanks
again, I'll prolly repost a new subject about audio. Thanks!

Try the following regarding your sound problem. Open the following file
with a text editor: /var/log/dmesg

Mine shows the following entry about 40 lines down:

isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards...
isapnp: Card 'CS4236B'

If you're lucking you'll get the model number of your sound chip. (The one
shown above is a "Crystal Sound" device.) You can use this to hunt down
the correct driver for your PC.
