How to dual boot redhat and XP
|
|
|
| Hi,
I searched Google and could not find my particular situation, so I hope
someone
has suggestions.
I have a new Compaq/HP laptop that has XP Professional installed. I would
like to dual
boot it with RH 9. I used Partition Magic to create a second partition in
ext3 format.
All the posts I've found indicate using a floppy to boot linux or test GRUB
or something
similar, and that is my problem, this laptop did not come with a floppy
drive.
So if I attempt to install RH 9 on the ext3 partition, where do I have GRUB
install? I've
read that you can't boot into XP if you install GRUB into the MBR. Will I
ever be able to
boot back into linux?
How can I create a linux rescue disk or linux boot disk? The laptop has a
cd burner, but
I really won't know if it will work under RH 9.
I guess as long as I don't screw up XP, I can always use Partition Magic to
wipe out the
linux partition.
Thanks for any help.

Good so far...

That sucks... hehehe. But, you mentioned that you have a cd drive, and you
should be able to create a bootable cd that you can use as your linux boot
disk instead of using a floppy. I haven't done this but I'm more than
certian someone has and I'm also equally certian that Google can point you
in the right direction. Search for "dual booting from cd" or "linux winxp
cd dual boot" etc.

Windows is really picky about having to share the first boot partition with
anything else (because you'll only *ever* need Windows, right? pheh!). I
don't know exactly how, but I know that just as people have used cds as
boot disks for GRUB, so have they used other partitions on the same
harddisk...somewhere. I really don't know how this is done, though.

And there you have it. Protect the WinXP partition or face the ultimate
defeat in the quest to not buy WinXP twice all over again.
Sorry I didn't get really specific, but as I said, I'm sure you can find
information about this somewhere out there on the web.

| Hi Group.... Am Green as green can be, as a newbie to RedHat9 (tried other
versions without succsess)
Was going to post an unrelated problem when the first message i saw was this
one.
I have a Tosh A10 Laptop, with XP-Home installed
I installed RedHat9 also, so I can (at boot up) choose which OS I want.
First I used a Partition manager and decreased the FAT32 drive from 30Gig to
about 24Gig, then created a swap Partition, and two other Ext3 (?)
Partitions.
Put the downloaded disk1 into the CDROM drive and booted. Went through the
install ok untill I came to the BOOT LAODER options...mmmmm what do I do? oh
sod it, I decided to use GRUB, everything LOOKED OK, I even re-named the DOS
to Windows XP Home...then created the \usr and \ mount points (?) .. THE
moment of truth was when I re-booted the machine after the very nice
install...
I was greeted with a new screen, It worked.
I do not need a floppy disk, nor a bootable CD..
I think its really quite cool, I am still getting my head round the new
enviroment, and trying to understand the commands, and how to install new
software (which at first appearance looks dead easy with the RPM's!)
cough cough...
So I would say try it, I found it a very simple task.. but would say knowing
a little about the partitions is a priority before you attempt it..
Regards
