do i need to download programs and patches like i did in windows?
how do i develope the habit of using Linux?
note: for starters i would rather use linux as a simple home user, not as a
programer or web site admin

Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy. Just use it for a simple home
user there is not much that you can't do on Linux unless your a gamer.
I use Linux for about 95% of my computing needs while at home. I have
done school projects and presentations totaly in Linux using Openoffice
while my teammates on the project used M$ office and had no problems
with compatibility. The more you boot into Linux and use it the more
comfortable you will become. Then there will be a time when you don't
even think about booting Linux or Windows. Remember freedom is a good
thing.
