Author kernel version

I just downloaded the latest stable kernel from kernel.org. The version
number is 2.4.20. How do I know what subversion it is?

Has anyone had any trouble booting the system after compiling and installing
the latest 2.4.20 kernel?

Are there any gotchas I should watch out for?

The vanilla kernel has no subversions. Redhat uses subversions to
discriminate the different patched kernel versions based on the same
kernel source.

Do you mean anything special?

OK. I guess RedHat would patch the kernel for two reasons. One would be
enhanced features and the second would be security releases. Is this
correct?

If so what are the "enhanced features" in the kernel source for the latest
RedHat patch? and are they int he source at kernel.org?

Also does the "vanilla kernel" have up to date security patches in the
source tree?

If the RedHat kernel is better than the vanilla one where can I get the
latest RedHat kernel source for 2.4.20?

Well I was hoping it would boot. Which it does - so I'm lucky. It doesn't
seem to run my NAT script anymore. The netfilter part of the config seems
to be changed significantly from 2.4.19 to 2.4.20 so I cannot just copy my
old .config file and use it. I don't know what modules I should configure
to run normal NAT forwarding for a small network.

I run up2date to keep most of the other packages up to date but deselect the
kernal and a few other things I have modified.

You could always copy the missing source from the kernl.org kernel-source to
the redhat kernel-source. This should work as long as you don't use Redhat9
kernel, which needs that drivers are patched for the threading system from
kernel 2.5.
