Is there a maximum number of TCP connections a server (Linux) can have
active at the same time. Note that I do not mean to use HTTP but my own
protocol over TCP so the connections needs to be active all the time but
doesn't necessarily send data all the time.

One of the limits is that that comes from the limit on the maximum
number of file descriptors you can have open at the same time.

Some of the limits might be hardware-dependent (system memory, for
example), while others might be "artificial ones" (i.e. they can be
set up by the system administrator).
