Author localdomain DNS

I have just read a previous post using the idea of localdomain, such as

red.localdomain.
blue.localdomain.
green.localdomain.

Is the a domain name "localdomain" a valid one, and does the computer
acknowledge this properly, i.e.. not look at the internet for answers.
If this is the case, can this be implemented in a BIND Zone, for a
functional local DNS Server.

Thanks,

Mike (A Linux junior)
