I just installed RH9. I selected the default
server installation.

There are two NIC cards in my machine. One is
connected to a (roadrunner) cable modem, and the
other to a five port hub.

The card connected to the modem is configured
to use DHCP. The ifconfig command shows that
DHCP is working since the card is getting
an IP address (and a ns address is put in resolv.conf).

The problem is I still can't get out to the internet.
When I try to ping the DNS address I get destination unreachable.
The default installation gave me iptables, but I don't think the problem
is related to iptables, since I deleted the symlink
from /etc/rc.d/rc.3 that starts iptables and the result
is the same.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mark

well if you cant ping by ip, and a nameserver is being written to
resolv.conf, next question is, are you getting a default gateway? TRied
running redhat-config-network in x to set up the interface?

Not sure. When I do "route", the Gateway column is '*' for
all interfaces. When I do "traceroute [IP of ns]" it sits
there for a while, then prints one line and returns.

Since I am running a server installation, I have no x. I ran it in
the shell and it didn't help.

Problem solved. I had a line "Gateway=[internal IP of NIC
connected to hub]" in /etc/sysconfig/network which I erased.
