Problem exporting to /etc/fstab

Is there any reason why I can't export an NFS file system to /etc/fstab?

As far as I'm aware, NFS is running correctly. When I execute
/usr/sbin/exportfs -a -v the command line says it exported properly, but
there's no new line in the fstab file.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
