Apache2: Different Local and Internet pages: Virtualhosts and Wildcards:
Stuck!

Trying for the 3rd time (this time also to redhat.networking.general in the
hope for some help!) to get this message to post so apologies to anyone who
keeps getting it (I don't with BT Openworlds news server!!!)

---

I am not sure what to look for to find my answer to this so apologies for
the poor question in advance.

I will soon be on ADSL and want to host my own websites. I have setup and
configured my server with VirtualHosts and tested by modifying my local
HOSTS file as well as connecting to the URLs defined and all works well. I
am using dyndns and no-ip for these.

I would like to create a default page so if I visit my Internet IP address
(which will be dynamic) I get (for example) a list of the websites it is
hosting, BUT if I visit the servers UNC name http://servername or LOCAL IP
address I would like it to show a different page just for us at home to see.

I thought I had read the first entry in VirtualHosts would be the default.
It did appear this way on my tests but it showed the page I wanted to be
kept for local viewing only.

I have also been playing with the "WildCard" feature of dyndns and no-ip.

I would like it so that if I enter a "bad" address e.g.
http://sdfgsdf.mydomain.no-ip.com it gets directed to the page not found
page for that domain rather than the "default" virtualhosts page as it does
presently (this is as well as having a different "local" to "Internet"
default page as my previous post.

I have tried serveralias of *.mydomain.no-up.com on a different
mydomain.no-ip.com virtualhost which sort-of worked - except needs a new
folder setup. Really it the customised page not found or other pages I
would like to use - so I can create a page for <anything>.mydomain.no-ip.com
that displays a list of the allowed names for that domain.

I hope my question is understandable and somebody can help me
in the right direction!

Richard

Richard,

Have looked at VirtualHost by directory, forgot the exact name of the Apache
Directive? You also need some Error Directives.

I have cracked it - thanks.

It was down to the <VirtualHosts IP.ADD.RE.SS> and the order they fall in -
all seems to work now.

Cheers
Richard
