Author 3c509 NIC not working

I have had a junk PC running a RH6 firewall/router for some time,
until a recent disk crash. I took the opportunity to install RH9. The
installation looked okay, but now there seems to be some problem with
the NIC. I can ping localhost and the local IP address
(192.168.1.254), but not other machines on the network. Also, there is
no hub light for the firewall machine. I set the port address and IRQ
from my notes in /etc/modules.conf like so:

alias eth0 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=5 xcvr=3

netstat -rn looks like this:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window
irtt Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0
0 eth0
169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0
0 eth0

I should probably junk the card and get a more modern pnp card, but it
bothers me that it used to work and doesn't now. Also, on my Win98
machine, the hub light goes on when the machine first powers up.
Should I expect that on the firewall?

No default route?

It shouldn't come to that...

I assume the connection is up, although if the "hub light" isn't on, it
may not be. Does

/sbin/ifconfig eth0

contain a line with UP and RUNNING in it?

I guess I just needed a little encouragement. I finally got it
working. It seems my notes were outdated. In modules.conf, I had
xcvr=3, which was directing I/O to the BNC, which is what I was using
before I got the hub. When I changed to xcvr=4 (the RJ45), it worked
fine.

Maybe RTFM works after all.
