login with consol and Telnet problam

Hi All

i have Redhat Linux 9.0 i don't know why i can't login from console and telnet..

on console when i give the login name root it goes blank...

and on telnet when i call ip there is only Redhat Linux release 9 (shrink)

but no login screen..

pls advice can i resume it or should i reinstall
