I hope someone can help me.

Yesterday, I had to reinstall Linux because I couldn't log on (it
wouldn't prompt me for a password). I reinstalled from distribution
CD's on which I had burned ISO images. The version of the kernel on
these CD's is 2.4.20-8.

After installing Linux, I installed the latest final version of Mozilla
(1.4), OpenOffice.org, the JRE plugin and Acrobat Reader. Since my
modem is a winmodem, I downloaded the appropriate driver in rpm format
from the Linuxant site and installed it. Everything was working fine.

I used my Red Hat Network demo account to run the up2date service.
Using a modem, this took about 10 hours (lots of packages to update).
After doing this, I had to uninstall the modem driver and reinstall it
because I had upgrade the kernel version to 2.4.20-19.9. After I did
this, I was able to dial-up and connect to the internet just fine.

Then, I exited from my xwindows session. Upon exit, I remembered that I
hadn't done something that I wanted to do, so typed startx to start
another xsession. At this point, X wouldn't run, I got a message about
a missing pcidata module and a "fatal error" message (see attached file
for specifics).

I am aware that a file named libpcidata.a should be in
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/, but this file does not exist on my computer. I
have no idea what happened to it - I certainly didn't delete it.

Does anyone know how to rectify this problem without having to
reinstall? If anyone has one, please make the explanation simple. I am
reasonably new to Linux and still learning.

Thanks in advance.

Colleen
