Can I prevent in Gnome up-popping windows from progs to hijack the scope?

It's quite irritating that when I'm typing, some prog pops up a window
with 'OK - Cancel', and as I was just at the end-of-line, inadvertently I
type ENTER and the prog does something I didn't want it to do.
Can this behavior be shut of in Fedora Core 1's Gnome?
