GDM Welcome Screen Font Change?

I'm using RHEL3 and my GDM is gdm-2.4.1.6-10.

How can I change the font for the Welcome message? Googling indicates
that support for the Font= line in gdm.conf was dropped in favor of a
"pango-like" XML scheme somewhere between 2.2.x and 2.4.x. RedHat's KB
doesn't help, they have a RHEL4 specific answer, but it doesn't work on
RHEL3.
