Moving from RH9 to fedora
|
|

| I'm in about to be moving from redhat 9 to fedora and have a couple of questions.
The first question is: Am I better off "upgrading" RH9 to fedora? Or am I better
off backing up my configuration and other data and do a clean install?
The reason for this question is that while reading the documentation page for fedora
I saw they mentioned a problem with the "upgrade" and gnome. I took a quick look of the
RPM's I have installed and there are a lot of gnome rpms. Do I really need to remove them
all and reinstall? Also how big of an issue is it?

If you had read the release notes carefully, you would have noticed that
they are talking about Ximian Gnome installations that are not supported.
So, if you are using the Gnome version that came with RH9 you shouldN#t
have any problems. Verify whether you have any Ximian packages on your
system: 'rpm -qa | grep -i ximian'
As long as you have RH9 packages on your system you can painlessly upgrade
using apt4rpm for example.

I was wondering about that. I just took it for granted that Gnome is developed
by Ximain. I have the version of Gnome installed by the RH9 cds so I guess I'll
be all right.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to start all over with a fresh installation. Thanks
for the quick reply and help!

This may or may not be normal experience, but I tried to upgrade from
RH9 to FC1 - boy was THAT an unholy mess! Everything worked fine
except all of the modules/module load stage.... That didn't work at
all.

Strange, did you have a customized RH9 setup? The only problems I
encountered had to do with a couple of repackaged PERL rpms. I just had to
remove them manually and everything went without a hitch. It even worked
for upgrading 7.3 to FC1. I used apt4rpm and am still really impressed.

No customizations - straight out of the box and up2dated. I set up a
junk system just to try the upgrade from RH to FC before I tried it
with a live system. Based on what happened, I'll plan on a
reformat/install/restore. Even if what happened was a 1 in a million
chance (which I find unlikely, to be honest) no way can I risk that
with a hot server.
