Sorry to hear about your luck. A better approach when getting started
with with Linux is to download it for free, if you have a high-speed
internet link, and burn your own CD's. This costs just time and some
blank CD's if you are able to burn CDs.
If you dont want to do this, there are many places on the internet where
you can buy pre-made sets of CD's for a few dollars. I use
www.linuxwerks.com. Red Hat 9 comes on 3 CD's for $6.00 i think.
As you found, "buying" software for first time trial is risky. I assumed
if you buy a boxed set from Red Hat, your are really paying for
installation support for period of time. So perhaps instead of asking
them for a refund, you should be asking them for the help and support to
get it installed on your machine, which is presumably what you have paid
for. Never having owned a "boxed" set, I may be wrong about this, but
that is what i always thoght was true/

Hey thanks Jim; that's about the most useful/productive advice anyone's
posted so far. Definitely on my future to-do list! (Though I'll
certainly check on their return policy for motherboards and memory first.)

Thanks for the good info! Excellent.
It'll be awhile though before I upgrade.
